Corktown

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Gospel of Matthew 28:19-20

Corktown is an historic community right in the heart of downtown Detroit. In fact the oldest neighborhood in Detroit (established in 1834), Corktown was originally settled by Irish immigrants arriving in Michigan via the Erie Canal. From 1901 - 1999, Corktown was the home of the Detroit Tigers, whose historic Tiger Stadium was settled at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull until mid-2009. Corktown's business and residential district slowly eroded over the decades as the metro Detroit area expanded into the suburbs. When the Tigers moved east into the heart of downtown in 2000, what was left of the business district of Corktown sputtered. Some new life has been breathed into the area in the last 5 years, most notably with the opening of Slows Bar BQ in 2005 and Mudgies and Le Petit Zinc in 2008. Unfortunately the painful facts of the last 50 years remain. The Greater Corktown/Mexicantown neighborhood has been divided by freeways and vacated by manufacturing and commercial businesses.

New Way Corktown does not seek to provide economic solutions to the Corktown community. We merely seek justice, hope and peace in a society that has been dominated by the sword and the check book. By committing to faith, hope and love we believe that we can fight the physical and spiritual need of ourselves and our neighbors.
